LASIK or Laser in-Situ Keratomileusis offers a number of benefits over other forms of laser vision correction because it is performed under a protective layer of corneal tissue.

This procedure deals with less eye surface area which makes healing faster, as well as providing less chance for tissue scarring. It also allows for quicker healing times. The chance of corneal haze is greatly lessened as well. Patients will experience a quicker return of vision. Often within 24 hours of surgery.

Although postoperative results vary, most patients are able to pass a drivers' license test without their glasses or contact lenses.

SHOULD I TRY LASIK?

Nearly everyone who wears contacts or glasses can benefit from LASIK. A prerequisite is to have stable vision for a year before the procedure. By this is meant to not have a huge loss of vision before the procedure.

LASIK patients typically show signs of far-sighted or near-sighted vision and/or have astigmatism. You must meet some medical and visual health guidelines and be in fair health in general. Age is not generally a problem. LASIK is regularly performed on people of all ages.

If you are ready for a change in your life, to correct your vision, you are ready for LASIK.

Laser vision correction is not recommended while pregnant, nursing, or taking certain medications.

Dr. Robbins will schedule a consultation which will provide information at to your suitability for LASIK treatment. The Doctor will discuss your prognosis with you and decide if you are a good candidate for LASIK. You will be able to make an educated decision on your vision.

BENEFITS OF LASIK

The greatest benefit of LASIK is permanent visual correction. For most people this means a life free of glasses and contacts!

The LASIK procedure pain free and convenient. Both eyes can be done at the same time and the entire procedure generally takes on about two hours and can go back to work soon, usually the next day. You will live a vision corrected life without the hassle of glasses or contacts and don't forget, you are going to save money on contacts, fluids etc., and / or glasses themselves! This is a significant savings for the long term. If you were allergic to your contacts you can kiss that issue goodbye as well.

Generally patients return to driving and work the very next day. Your vision will improve gradually over the first 24 hours till the full effect of the surgery is realized.

ABOUT THE PROCEDURE

After your eye has been completely numbed using "eye drop" anesthesia, an eyelid holder will be placed between your eyelids to prevent you from blinking.

Your surgeon will use something called a microkeratome to make a little "flap" in the cornea. You will look directly into a light and the procedure will be performed to reshape your cornea. This is generally accomplished in less than a minute! You may feel some pressure on the eye but no pain or discomfort. The protective flap will be folded back where it bonds with your eye with any stitches or other means of securing it. Your eye heals itself!
